We have attempted to simplify the installation of e-Classifieds on your web server. For example, all of the user-configurable variables are contained in just one file, and each variable is preceded by a paragraph of text that explains what that variable does and how it should be set. Several versions have an online wizard for setting the system variables. The package also includes a README.TXT file that contains full configuration and installation instructions. Nonetheless, while we have made every attempt to make installing these programs as easy as possible, it's still true that if you have never installed a CGI program before, it can seem like a daunting process. That's why we are now offering professional installation for a modest fee of only $50 ($75 for Windows NT servers). That way, you don't have to mess with setting variables, uploading files, setting permissions in Unix, and the like. You can just sit back while we do all the work for you. And since we developed these programs and know them inside and out, you can rest easy, knowing that the programs will be installed right. All you have to do is provide us with FTP and Telnet access information for your server, such as your username and password. We may also ask you or your hosting company for certain information such as the location of Perl 5, your e-mail program (Sendmail or Blat), and the path to the cgi-bin on your server.
If you would like us to professionally install your classified ads program on your server, please let us know at the time of purchase. Please note that the $50 fee is for standard installations on Unix/Linux servers that require less than one hour. Standard installations on Windows NT servers cost $75. For both Unix and Windows NT servers, if the installation takes more than one hour due to non-standard server setups, server misconfigurations, incorrect permissions settings, ACL setups on Unix, or for any other reason, additional fees will apply. For example, if you are on a Windows NT server and the server permissions are not set up correctly so that the program can write to its own files and directories, it will not function properly until your web hosting company or server admin sets these permissions correctly. If we have to ask you to contact your server admin or web hosting company and are required to log onto your server more than once due to incorrect permissions settings, extra charges will automatically apply. If you do not agree to this, please do not ask us to install the program on a Windows NT server. As another example, if you are on a Unix server that is using ACL, this will not allow us to directly set the permissions without going through your web hosting company (in fact, we highly recommend avoiding ACL setups altogether, as they cause many problems). Again, extra charges will automatically apply.
Also, the standard installation fee does not include the setup of cron jobs on your server, as cron is not available on many servers, and even when it is, different servers use different methods for enabling cron. If you wish to set up the separate cron programs, you will need to talk to your web hosting company to find out if cron is available on your server and how to set up cron jobs for your server.
If you ask us to install the program for you, we will need the following information:
- FTP address
- FTP username
- FTP password
- Telnet address (if available)
- Telnet username
- Telnet password
- path to Perl 5
- path to sendmail (or other mail program)
- full server path to your cgi-bin
- URL that corresponds to your cgi-bin
Although we can usually install e-Classifieds within 24 hours, we may not always be able to process installation requests immediately, which is why we also recommend other installers. Please contact us if you would like a recommendation.
